Jury citation on PLAYGROUND CENTRAL JAIL (prison) | SAKINA HASSAN JAFRI

The charitable nature of the small park for children in jail was one of the initiatives that most appealed to the jury for several reasons. The basic approach to the scheme, of making small well considered changes to the existing landscape, was well considered. Improving and extending the paved (cemented) floor area under the existing canopy, making use of existing shady trees, refurbishing and reorganizing the existing toys, helped deliver a larger sheltered and safe space to play. The scheme design was undertaken in consultation with Children Psychologist and a study of the behavior of children within the jail; a secluded, confined with minimum interaction to the outside forces, reflective in the design approach which was commended.
